Black History Month UK: Celebrating Our Heritage, Stories and Contributions

October is a special month in the UK as communities come together to recognise and celebrate Black history, culture, achievements and contributions.
For Nigerian women living in the UK, Black History Month provides an opportunity to reflect on where we come from, celebrate the richness of our heritage and recognise the many ways African women contribute to families, workplaces and communities across the country.
Celebrating Our Heritage
Our heritage is an important part of who we are. From our languages and traditional clothing to our food, music, faith, values and family traditions, Nigerian culture is rich and diverse.
Living in the UK does not mean leaving our heritage behind. We can embrace life in the UK while continuing to pass important aspects of our culture to the next generation.

Celebrating Nigerian Women
Nigerian women across the UK contribute to society in many different ways. They work in healthcare, education, business, technology, social care, the public sector and many other professions.
Others support their communities through volunteering, mentoring, church groups, charities, women’s organisations and community activities.
Every contribution matters.
Passing Our Stories to the Next Generation
One of the most meaningful ways to celebrate our heritage is by sharing our stories with younger generations.
Children can learn about their Nigerian heritage through family stories, traditional meals, Nigerian languages, music, celebrations, books and conversations with parents and grandparents.
When we share our experiences, we help younger generations understand where they come from while giving them the confidence to build their own future.
Building Community
Black History Month can also remind us of the importance of community.
As Nigerian women in the UK, supporting one another can take many forms—from sharing useful information and opportunities to offering encouragement, friendship and practical support.
A simple introduction, recommendation, conversation or act of kindness can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.
Looking Forward
Celebrating Black history is not only about looking at the past. It is also an opportunity to think about the future.
What kind of community do we want to build? What opportunities can we create for younger women? How can we support women who are new to the UK? How can we continue celebrating our culture while creating opportunities for growth?
These are conversations worth having throughout the year.
A message to Nigerian women in the UK
This October, let us celebrate our heritage, honour the women who came before us, recognise the contributions being made today and encourage the next generation to dream boldly.
Our stories matter.
Our experiences matter.
Our contributions matter.
And our communities are stronger when we support one another.
Happy Black History Month!
